Public transit use in Halifax has increased by two per cent since 2001, the 2006 census shows. Overall in Nova Scotia, there has been a one per cent increase in public transit use. When this picture of the Halifax ferry terminal was taken in 1943, the Second World War was at its height, Halifax was packed with sailors and soldiers from around the world, and a ferry trip cost six cents. There were no bridges over the harbour, so the ferry was the fastest way to Dartmouth for motorists. (The Chronicle Herald archives)
